What’s happened in AI: March 25th-31st

Big news this week for AI M&A with McDonald’s acquiring an Israeli AI startup for $300mm and Daimler Trucks acquiring an autonomous truck startup for an undisclosed amount. For those interested in reading more about the autonomous truck industry, take a look at one of my earlier posts on the industry. I expect to see a lot more M&A activity going forward.

What’s happened in AI: September 24th-30th

Big week across the board in the AI world. To start, there were a few developments related to social good including Microsoft’s $40mm fund dedicated to developers focused on solving humanitarian problems and Google using its AI to predict floods in India. We definitely to see more of this. For the major company developments, look no further than DeepMind partnering with Unity to develop simulated AI training environments and Ford potentially eyeing an IPO for its self-driving car unit.

This week we saw another tech giant face internal push back on partnering with the government on AI initiatives. It was Google over the past few weeks with Project Maven, and now it’s Amazon with the use of its facial recognition software with U.S. police departments.
